These are a few bee facts that you may or may not know...Enjoy!
• Honey bees are the only insects that produce food for humans.
• Honey bees produce beeswax from eight paired glands on the underside of their abdomen.
• Honey bees must consume about 17-20 pounds of honey to be able to produce each pound of beeswax.
• Honey bees fly at 15 miles per hour. • Worker honey bees live for about 4 weeks in the spring or summer but up to 6 weeks during the winter. • Honey bees are almost the only bees with hairy compound eyes. • The queen may mate with up to 17 drones over a 1-2 day period of mating flights.
• Honey bees' wings beat 11,400 times per minute.
• Honey bees communicate with one another by "dancing" so as to give the direction and distance of flowers.
• To make one pound of honey, workers in a hive fly 55,000 miles and visit two million flowers.
• Bees are in danger of disappearing from our environment. Farming practices continue to disturb the natural habitats of honey bees and bumblebees at a rate which gives them little chance for re-establishment. The honey bee is under attack from the varroa mite and it is only the treatment and care provided by beekeepers that is keeping colonies alive. Most wild honey bee colonies have died out as a result of this disease. We must all be good stewards of the earth, to include our honey bees.
